Open Thread: Inspired Blog Challenge Day One

I am participating in the Inspired Blog Challenge running from 5/1/14-5/31/14, in which I will attempt to post at least twenty times, among other goals.  I have turned off moderation of the comments–please don’t make me regret this.

For those of you reading this blog for the first time, I’m Scott K. Jamison, SKJAM! on the internet.  I am a customer service professional looking for new opportunities in the customer service field.  The main purpose of this blog, however, is reviews of books and other pop culture.

I was born in Minnesota, and have lived there most of my life, save a stint in the Air Force.  My current reading is Deathless by Catherynne M. Valente, which I hope to have a review of up in the next few days.

For a topic–what was the most recent book you read…that you’ll admit to?

  1. I look forward to reading your review. I’ve already added the book from your last review to my reading list. My lastest read is The Where, The Why, the How – a quirky book of short science essays illustrated by various artists. I loved it.

    1. I enjoy quirky detectives–have since I read Agatha Christie’s stuff these many years ago.

I have reviewed some science books–a couple of weeks ago it was “Girls Research”, an elementary school book on women in science fields. And there’s one coming up about the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum.

  2. Welcome to the group Scott. I read prolifically but can never remember either the title or the author. Delightful. Puts me in awkward spots when I ramble on enthusiastically about my latest read and someone invariably asks “What’s it called.” I’ll work on paying more attention. Looking forward to your review.

    1. For my reviews, I generally have the book sitting right next to me. often, I;ll need to refer back to it in the middle.

  3. Welcome to the group! Looking forward to your review, and others. I love to read, but oh, my, the choices. So always good to hear what others think about a book. Currently I’m reading The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnet as part of a plan to re-read so-called Children’s Books, but now as an adult, and A Language Older Than Words by Derrick Jensen. That one’s a bit of a tough read because it speaks such truth. Oh, and mustn’t forget what I’m listening to – a re-listen of Louise Penny’s Still Life. I’m getting ready for the release of her latest in August, by rereading all of the earlier ones. Phew. Well. There you have the active ones – doesn’t count those I’m halfway through and have temporarily put aside.

    1. The Secret Garden is interesting because it doesn’t shy away from saying that the main character isn’t very likable at the beginning of the story. Contrast Little Lord Fauntleroy, where we are informed of how swell a lad he is from the beginning.

  4. Welcome newbie Scott! I feel like I am new, too. Looking forward to seeing more of your blog posts. What have I read lately? Yikes….I’m still carrying around my “WordPress for Dummies” if that counts?

    1. It does indeed. I’m probably missing a lot of functionality because I only use the minimum of features that will get the job done.

  5. I look forward to seeing your review in full when you finished the book; I wonder if the story is good to the end…? Anyway, the last book I read was “Gone with the Wind”. I got a copy as a Christmas gift, but I’ve been slowly reading it.

    1. Ah, Gone With the Wind, now there’s an epic. After that one, I felt that Scarlett O’Hara’s picture should be next to the word “conniving” in the dictionary.
