Open Thread: Housing Situation Update

As you may remember, last year I was forced out of my apartment of thirty years residence and required to find a new place on short notice.  The expenses involved were considerable, so I reluctantly created a GoFundMe campaign.  Thanks to the generosity of the internet, I was able to raise a large portion of the money I needed to move.

Created for me by Indigo Caldwell; please do not reuse without permission.

And move I did, to a quite nice new place.  Due to a screwup by the phone company, however, I was without a phone or internet for a week thereafter.  And when that got turned on, I had become deathly ill so the first thing I did was call someone to take me to the doctor.  I wound up spending a week in the hospital.  Without insurance, that meant I was in dire financial straits, especially with all the work I’d missed!

By the time I’d straightened that out, my job ended, and I spent the next six and a bit months unemployed, draining my remaining funds.  And by this point, I had forgotten all about updating people on how I was doing.  My apologies for keeping you all waiting so long.

I got a new job in mid-July, with variable hours (30-40 per week depending on client needs) and spent the next half-month in training with minimal hours.  Just as I was getting to the point I could do the job, and thus rebuild my funds with decent hours, I was informed that the landlords had decided not to renew my lease.  Thus I needed to find a new place again.

I have now located such an apartment, which I can move into on 9/30/17.  However, they want first and last months’ rent on that day, and with other moving expenses, I’ll need about $1850.  Fortunately, I’m in somewhat better financial shape right now and should be able to save $1200 or so from my paychecks (God willing and I don’t get sick), leaving only about $650 to raise.

But first, here’s that shout-out I promised in the original GoFundMe post.  Several donors were anonymous, so I decided on first names only for most of these:

Thanks to Anna, Anthony, Benjamin, Brett, Brian, Captn Strawberry, Carlos, Chad, Cheryl, Chris, Davia, Deborah, Frances, Grant, Greg, Greg II, Harry and Sue, Hero Games Online Friend, Jefferson, Jessica, Jim, Jim II, John, Kay, Kim, Lawrence,  Liz, Logan, Mallene, Matthew, Michael, Michel, Ruth, Scott, Speeding Tortoise, Shaun, Terran and Tom!  Your help really made a difference!

And I have put Hector and the Search for Happinessby François Lelord on a hold list at the library for reading and review ASAP.

If you qualified for a link or book review request, but didn’t specify one at the time, and want to now, please let me know.

The GoFundMe didn’t quite make goal, and the amount left is just about the amount I’ll need, so if you’re feeling generous and have a buck or two to spare, please consider donating at https://www.gofundme.com/skjam to keep me off the streets!  Thanks again!
